Resources for survivors

The Public Libraries hold a number of books for survivors and MSSAT recommend the following;

"Victims No Longer: Men recovery from incest and other sexual abuse"  by Mike LEW. Library ref; 362.89 LEW

A classic self help book dealing with male survivor issues, one of the first written in this field.

"Abused Boys: The neglected victims of sexual abuse" by Mic HUNTER. ref; 362.89 HUN

An excellent self help book, with a series of survivor stories.  Includes questions at the end of each chapter helping the reader relate the content to his own experience.

"Wounded Boys: Heroic Men: A man's guide to recovering from child abuse" by Daniel Jay SONKIN. ref; 362.76 SON

Another well written work dealing exclusively with male survivor issues.

"Trauma and Recovery"  by Judith L. HERMAN. Ref; 616.8521 HER

Authoritive work on all aspects of trauma and recovery. Written by a World renowned expert.

"The Invisible Wound: A new approach to healing childhood sexual abuse"  by Wayne KRITSBERG. Ref 362.88 KRI

A wonderful book for those who wish to contact their inner child. Almost essential reading, as it is the child we once were that needs to do the healing work.

"Healing the Child Within"  by Charles L. WHITFIELD. Ref 616.89 WHI

An excellent and well written book.  In depth discovery and recovery for adult children of dysfunctional families. Over 1 million copies sold.

A bestseller in a series of books by Bradshaw about dysfunctional families.  Also available on audio tape.

"Child Abuse Trauma: Theory and Treatment of the Lasting Effects" by John N. BRIERE.  Ref; 616.8582 BRI

A book written for those who work with survivors (therapists) but extremely educational for those who can get their heads around the clinical words.

Author: Ben Nuttall-Smith

bennuttall-smith.ca

"This is a wonderful, evocative book about a very rough childhood and manhood - and surviving it."

Margot Thomson, Retired Clinical Psychologist.

"I have read your story cover to cover, could not put it down ...  an amazing read, highlighting the uniqueness of each human being's life relating to God, neighbour, and self in their journey to wholeness."

Father Tom Nicholson, Catholic priest

"Nuttall-Smith tells his story simply, thoroughly, and straightforwardly and offers many useful insights.   He manages to leaven the tragedy and pathos with humour. For the hope that this offers, I recommend his book to all men.  I especially recommend it to members of men's groups who are labouring with issues of personal recovery and fellowship."

David C. Manning  Professional Counsellor (retired) and Leader of Men's  Groups

film Review

John reviews two films...

I have seen a couple of thought provoking films, but please take care as the contents could act as triggers.

FILM - "The Woodsman"  - Was on at the cinemas just recently and I imagine will be released on DVD/Video soon.  It is a first for the Director and stars Kevin Bacon as a convicted pedophile named Walter returning from prison to his home town.  Bacon is quite outstanding in this difficult role and well supported by his real life wife who plays the part of a woman who befriends Walter at the lumberyard where they both work.  The Director crafts Walter's grim story with great skill avoiding any sense that we should feel sorry for or excuse Walter's past behaviour.  The way the various characters relate to each other is underpinned by each one’s past. A scene in the park with Walter and a young girl touches right at the core of compliance, as we experience the pain and despair of a lonely, vulnerable child who has already learnt to put the needs of others before her own well-being and safety. A chilling movie.

DVD - "Bad Education" (La Mala Educacion) - Available on DVD (Alice's in Christchurch) is an outstanding movie from Director Pedro Almodovar.  It is in spanish with subtitles and tells the story of two boys who attend a Catholic School and meet again 16 years later. One has become a film director (possibly this character is based on Almovodar's own life) and the other a writer.  The latter implores the former to read a story he has written which could be the base for a movie.  The story begins to overlap with reality as both men must confront their pasts and the decisions they made then and have to now make.  Almovodar has created a very bold, sometimes sad, but a very original movie.  Warning - some scenes may be very disturbing for some, so please have a support person with you.
